About the Art

My works include water colors, acrylics, oil and mixed media, and innovative newer work- nature/landscapes from travel to Lake George, NY, North Shore Oahu, Hawaii, and Bridal Veil Falls, Yosemite National Park, Sedona, Arizona. Also included are American species -carefully worked snowy egret, California sea and river otters, and my domestic cat in “action”. More classical still life studies are of purple grapes overflowing from a goblet,Van Gogh-ish flowers,a study of a single apple, and a graphite of an arrangement of palm leaves and pears. I have reworked a Cassatt painting of a girl in a hat as well Cezanne paintings of a grove of poplars and a closeup of a woman in a sashed hat. In quite a different style are two single paintings and one triptych of bold swirls of abstract color. I was told they are psychically obtained vestiges of an ancient language from a past life. Similar is a swirl of cosmic forms- infinitely interlocking. One can see Jackson Pollock /Matisse/Miro-ish influences in them, though. Finally, other signature pieces are a pair of lotuses on a dark green background and other Georgia O’Keefe-ish enlarged flowers.

My name in Chinese is “Wha Lin” or “Chinese Lotus”. The lotus is a Buddhist symbol of purity rising out of darkness. I feel so gifted by my Chinese name and my western name “Valerie” which is said to means “Spiritual Strength”. I can only hope to live up to the examples of these names.
